Steels, Grind and more!

Close-up of a knife with wood shavings.

The Convex Grind

The Convex Saber Grind (Sabervex) is in my opinion the best all around grind.  While not quite as good at slicing as a flat grind, it is tougher and superior for battening and wood carving/feather slicks. The Sabervex is a better bushcraft grind than a flat grind, a better slicer than the scandi and it is very easy to maintain your edge in the field.  Because of this I believe the Convex Saber Grind is the best do it all grind for hunting, bushcraft and utility work.  I grind my convex grinds thin with a small secondary edge. What this means is that you can sharpen the edge just like a normal flat grind with a "V" edge on a stone and a hard back strop. At the same time, the secondary edge is well blended into the bevel so if you prefer to sharpen on a mouse pad, or a rolling motion on a stone it will work very good as well.  At times I offer a Full Height Convex for a lighter and slicer option, but the Sabervex is my stander option.

Textured Scales

My textured handles provide an exceptional grip, making them ideal for bushcraft knives without being overly aggressive on your hand during use. This is why they have become my standard handle finish, ensuring superior grip when you need it most!

Traditional Satin or Polished Scales

These finishes give a beautiful traditional look and feel; however, they unfortunately lack grip during use. Additionally, due to the extra time involved in finishing they tend to be priced higher.

my go to steels

CPM 3V

CPM Cruwear/Zwear

CPM Cruwear/Zwear

(this steel is marked be a small "v" under the makers mark) 3V is an high toughness tool steel with great edge retention and good rust resistance. If you are after a hard use bushcraft knife this is your steel. Having 3% vanadium means you need diamond stones to properly sharpen 3V, but that is the only true down side it has. In my opinion it is the most balanced powder steel for bushcraft knives on the market. Although it is semi stainless you will still not want to leave it wet for extended periods of time. I heat treat all my 3V in house using a cryogenic treatment and low temper to a 61-62HRC.

CPM Cruwear/Zwear

CPM Cruwear/Zwear

CPM Cruwear/Zwear

These two names are used by different distributors for the same steel, which is marked by a '+' under the maker's mark. CPM Cruwear is an excellent choice for bushcraft knives, as it enhances the proven performance of 3V steel with improved edge retention and edge stability, as well as having the same rust resistance yet only a slight reduction in toughness. I normally heat treat it to a hardness of 63+-HRC

AEB-L

CPM Cruwear/Zwear

14C28N

(This steel is marked by a "-" under the maker stamp) Originally developed for razor blades AEB-L is an extremely fine grained, fine carbide stainless steel. What that gives you is a stainless steel that has edge retention like A2, toughness like 80CRV2, high edge stability and is as easy as O1 to sharpen in the field! I heat treat and cryo this steel in house to a 60-64HRC depending upon the intended use. Larger camp knives tend to be 60-61hrc to optimize shock resistance, while mid sized bushcraft knives are taken to 62-63hrc, and small EDC blade are 63-64hrc.

This steel represents an upgrade over AEB-L! It offers better edge retention and rust resistance, while only experiencing a minimal loss of toughness.

Frequently Ask Questions

Do you take custom orders?

NO (As of 4/4/26, I no longer take custom orders.) We list available knives on our Saturday drops at 12noon EST! You can see the example models on my Example Model Page. Be sure to sign up for our NEWSLETTER to stay updated on what's going on as well as our weekly available drops!

Where do you sell your knives?

On our Store Page Saturday at 12 noon Eastern Standard Time, unless otherwise noted.

Where do you ship your knives to

Pretty much anywhere in the world! If it's legal to ship knives to your state or country we most likely ship there. Take note you as the buyer are responsible to be sure it is legal to ship knives where you live. We do not ship to the UK.

What are your shipping days?

All knives sold through the store go in the mail on Wednesday mornings.

Do you do your own Heat Treat?

YES! I heat treat every knife in house to include cryo for high alloy tool steel and stainless steel.

How would you recommend sharpening my knife?

I recommend using a strop to keep it sharp.  It's the old saying; "A knife should be sharpened once and honed for a lifetime" .  Now if you do need to sharpen it I recommend using a good pair of diamond stones.  One to sharpen (about 320-600 grit), and one to refine the edge (about 1000-1500 grit) before stropping on a good stiff strop with a 1-4 micron diamond spray or paste for the final polish. You can find a list of recommended sharpening supplies here- AA Forge Amazon Store

What grind would you most recommend for bushcraft?

My personal preference is the convex grind for its versatility. In fact, the convex is the only grind I currently offer on my knives.

What is your warranty?

I warranty my knives against faults of the maker for life whether you're the first owner or the 100th.  For other repairs and spa treatments the cost and turn around times will differ.  For simple repairs it takes around two weeks, but for more extensive repairs or replacement it may take up to 3 months to work into the rotation.  Please take a look at our Warranty/Spa Page for full details.  To begin talking about any warranty work or spa treatment please go to our CONTACT PAGE!

Warranty and Spa Treatment

GENERAL WARRANTY

All our knives come backed with an heirloom style warranty. What this means is if you are the first owner or the hundredth it is covered for the life of the maker!

The general warranty covers faults of the maker and some material failures. Natural handle materials such as stag, bone, and wood may shrink, crack, and discolor with change in humidity, temperature, or age. This is normal and is not covered under this warranty, but falls under the Spa Treatment program. Scale de-lamination, heat treat or geometry issues on the other hand are fully covered under the warranty. If you believe you have an issue with your knife please use the CONTACT PAGE to get ahold of us to see what we can do! Please see the Spa Treatment section below for details on getting an issue or damaged taken care of.

I also cover any damage caused by "NORMAL USE". Please read below for more details, but the basic idea is use the knife as intended and not as a screw driver, prybar, splitting wedge for large logs ect..... This falls under abuse.

The general warranty also comes with a 7 day no question asked return or exchange policy. Once you receive your knife and if you aren't happy with something for any reason you have 7 days to contact us about a return or exchange. This only applies if the knife is unused and in new condition. Buying to test and return is not covered by this policy. Please see below on Returns.

ABUSE EXCLUSION

As alluded to above each knife style is designed to be used for their specific function. Using ANY knife for a purpose it was not intended for can cause damage and is misuse at best. This is common sense, but in any case it has to be said. Do not use a knife as a screw driver, prybar, splitting wedge for large logs, chopping masonry, cutting nail or bolts, digging, prying with the tip, chopping bone or antler, ect..... This falls under abuse.

If your knife is damaged, it can likely be fixed and we will do so as quickly and cost effectively as possible. If we determine the damage to be from misuse of the product, then you will be charged for repairs. We will estimate this cost and provide it to you before we repair the product. You will not receive a new, free knife out of a return linked to misuse/abuse. Please see the Spa Treatment section below for more details.

SPA TREATMENT-(touch-up)

This is a free and simple fix and clean up service on knives I make. This covers sharpening, edge repair, small handle repair and refinishing of the handle and blade. To get started on sending your knife in simply contact me through the CONTACT PAGE.  Large repair issues fall more into the warranty policy. Please see above for that. For shipping details please see above.

You can mail your knife to our P.O. Box below!

RETURNS

I have a seven day no questions asked return policy for an unused knife.  If the knife is received by us and has signs of use it does not qualify.

REFUNDS (IF APPLICABLE)

Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned knife. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund. If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your original method of payment, within 7 days. Please Note this does not include shipping due to that being lost to the shipping provider.

Late or missing refunds (if applicable)
If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again. Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted. Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted.
